Off season draws to close in style for Road Runners

RUNNING: About 40 runners teamed up for the annual Planet Paget event from Mackay Railway Station carpark - the penultimate run of the Shawn's Summer Social series - on the Australia Day weekend.

The event was well attended despite the scattered showers that prevailed but were happily welcomed in the humid conditions.

Dedicated Mackay Road Runners Club captain Jim Ford travelled back from Rockhampton on the same afternoon to advise runners of the very technical and challenging course, which had coveted prizes up for grabs in short and long course events.

Jim's cryptic clues had runners using their team skills to locate and photograph themselves, as evidence of reaching each nominated checkpoint before searching for the next landmark.

The winning short course team consisted of eight-year-old Max Scotton, who teamed up with his dad, Daniel, John Allen and Hannah Allen to race the Paget circuit in a bid to conquer all designated checkpoints throughout the large industrial estate.

Will Morgan, Fernanda De Lima and Nick Rewald were the fastest team in the long course event, locating checkpoints and clicking selfies before crossing the finish line for the race judge's final decision.

Excellent efforts were on display by several team members including Alice Single, Lauren Berts, Anna Berrigan, Tim Caddy, Dannelle Thompson, Adam Knesevic, Tim Caddy, Andrew Short, Jose Short, Brenda Windsor, Daniel Stampa, Colin Hardy, Jeanette Farrugia, Jo Skinner, Craig McGahey, Tam Wanstall, Steve Oberg, Karla Hook, Carmel Mahon, Kylie Harbour, Simon Henderson and Geoff Neale.

Runners are now focussing on the final run on the off season program, which will be held Sunday from The Grove Tavern carpark at 5.30pm.

Many thanks to Jim and Alana Ford for co-ordinating the off season summer program, which was this year named the inaugural Shawn's Summer Social Series in honour of one of the club's talented runners and committee stalwarts, Shawn Claydon, who passed away last August from pancreatic cancer.

Jim and Alana have devoted an enormous amount of time and effort to host Mackay Road Runners weekly runs as well as the Wednesday social running events from Bluewater Quay.

The Bluewater Quay events run all year round, therefore, Jim and Alana need to be congratulated on their extreme generosity in voluntarily offering their time and knowledge to benefit others.

Intending Mackay Road Runners members can now go online to register for the 2019 season, which commences on February 10, with a social 5km run at 5.30pm from the Old Mulherin Park at Mackay Marina.

Those interested are reminded the Mackay Regional Council Sports Expo and sign-on will be held on Sunday, February 10 from 9am until 1pm.
