Ocean Swims and Coffs Tri raise big sums for local charities

LOCAL event organiser Village Sports is excited to announce a donation of just over $23,000 to local charities and community groups.

The donation is proceeds of this year's bcu Coffs Tri and Beachside Radiology Coffs Ocean Swims held in March.

Conducted in near-perfect conditions, numbers in both the triathlon and swims were up on previous years, particularly with visitors from outside the Coffs Coast.

Beneficiaries include the Coffs Harbour, Sawtell and Woolgoolga Surf Lifesaving Clubs, the SES Coffs and Corindi crews, St John Ambulance, Coffs Harbour Marine Rescue, the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour Daybreak, Mid North Coast Disabled Surfers Association and Life Education.

"Most of these organisations are vital to the running of the triathlon and swim and without their support the events are simply not viable," event director Mick Maley said.

Village Sports is busy organising the annual Bendigo Bank Coffs Harbour Running Festival on September 6 and will again be able to donate proceeds to local community groups.

"Last year we were able to raise a significant amount of money to the Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour for distribution to local charities," Mick said.

"We couldn't run these events without the support and manpower from groups such as Rotary and we want to make sure the groups that turn up year after year are acknowledged for their time and contribution.

"Our aim is have a healthy, happy community and we organise sporting events to encourage participation across all age groups and abilities."

Village Sports has donated a total of $135,000 to local charities and community groups since its inception in 2011.
