NSW police arrested in pub spats

AT A TIME when drunken violence has been blamed for the deaths of two men in NSW in the past week, two of the state's police officers have been arrested in separate pub spats.

In the early hours of Monday morning, a 26-year-old off-duty officer from NSW was arrested on Queensland's Gold Coast after allegedly assaulting a security guard in front of a Surfers Paradise nightclub.

Police were forced to send out a press release about the alleged incident at the same time officers just south of the border were breaking the tragic news a man had died in the Tweed Hospital after he was allegedly bashed in front of a hotel the night before.

In Sydney, senior police had warned they would be out in force on the weekend following the fatal bashing of NSW teenager Thomas Kelly in King's Cross the previous Saturday.

On Friday afternoon, Acting Police Commissioner Catherine Burn had appealed for "responsible approach to alcohol" in Sydney's pubs.

She said "people should be able to go out and have a good time and not be accosted by drunks...it's sad, but it's simple - our love affair with alcohol continues and emergency services and medical professionals are left to clean up the mess."

Early Sunday morning, police were called to a pub on Sussex St in the heart of the city where an off duty constable allegedly refused to leave when asked.

It is alleged he then assaulted police and resisted arrest.

Both police officers face disciplinary action and will front court next month.
