BEING a mum is hard work, and doing a job full time can be tough, but combine the two, and life gets complicated.

We asked readers on the Daily's Facebook page whether working or being a mum was more difficult, and while opinions differed, as you would expect, it was combining the two that made life tricky for many.

"The hardest thing in the world is being a 'working mum'," Yvette Treasure commented.

"Juggling daycare, school, being an awesome mum and work is exhausting.

"And the guilt that comes with it is heart breaking at times."

Peta Hempsall said mothers who worked full time have twice as much to do as those whose don't.

"What makes the difference is the amount of help you receive at home," she said.

As a single mum, Mel Brierley said being a mum after finishing work was the hardest.

"You're both just so tired but must soldier on until bedtime," she said.

Despite the challenges of work and parenting, plenty of mums said they wouldn't chose to give up work to be a full-time mum.

Melissa Jones said she liked the balance going to work gave her life.

"I love my girls but sitting at work, lunch times to exercise, gives me time out, and I was going mad at home all day," she said.

Connie Page said the kind of job made the difference.

"If you love your job working full-time is definitely easier," she said.

"I've been a full-time mum for years when the kids (were) very little and it was tough."

But for many women who are able to be full-time mums, despite how hard raising kids could be, they wouldn't have it any other way.

"Hands down (I) loved being a stay at home mum much more than full-time work," Delia Newcombe said.

"Still don't know how I survived all those years as a full-time working mother either, but I did and my kids grew into beautiful, successful adults."
