Nothing to split local footy leaders

RUGBY LEAGUE: They’re top two sides, equal on premiership points and by the end of the weekend, that’s exactly how they remain.

Maroochydore-Coolum and Caloundra met in Round Nine of the Caloundra RSL Division One Cup on Saturday night gunning to take the outright league lead.

It wasn’t to be though, as both sides engaged in what soon became an arm wrestle, with completion rates down and it left Maroochydore coach Brett Winkler happy with splitting the points upon reflection.

“We were pretty disappointed in our second-half effort,” Winkler said.

“We turned over a lot of ball and made a lot of errors.

“We were happy to get the point in the end.”

Winkler said it was a frustrating game though, his side’s inability to hold the ball stifling their chance to play some expansive footy close to the Caloundra line.

“We just couldn’t hit our completion levels,” he said.

“Sometimes games just go that way.”

Winkler said his side had prepared extremely well for the game, making it harder to understand the performance.

Youngster Brad Kent was one shining light for the men in green though.

He bagged two tries to continue what’s been an impressive season thus far.

“Brad’s form’s been very good all year. He played well right across the park,” Winkler said.

Winkler praised Kent’s attacking ability, but added his starch in defence was also crucial.

“His defence is one of his hallmarks,” Winkler said.

Looking to next weekend, Winkler said his side would be aiming for peak preparations again this week before taking on a dangerous Caboolture outfit.
