Join Toastmasters, you've got nothing to lose but fear

AS THE holidays draw to a close, many students are busy sharpening pencils, filling pencil cases and buying and covering books in anticipation of a new semester.

At the University of the Sunshine Coast waits a group of people busily preparing for these keen pupils.

For more than 11 years USC Speakers (Toastmasters) Club have met future scholars with open arms ready to help them be the best that they can be.

Foundation member Brian Duckworth says, he is proud to be a part of a University based club dedicated to introducing students to the benefits of Toastmasters.

"Since we began over a hundred students have realised their potential and are now completing their studies or entering the workforce with confidence," he said.

USC Speakers is a part of the worldwide fraternity of Toastmasters International dedicated to building sound public speakers and strong leaders.

Established in California in 1924, Toastmasters now has over 15,000 clubs in 135 countries and has helped train over four million people.

USC Speakers president Terry Keene said he was a product of the support and encouragement given by the club.

"Every member was terrified to begin with, but USC Speakers has helped us gain the skills to speak confidently," he said.

"I now approach presentations with assurance, knowing I can deliver a speech that is both enjoyable and poignant."

As a part of the University, USC Speakers are aware of the pressures on many of the students.

Coordinator Jenny Duckworth said many university students were time poor and as result USC Speakers was very accommodating and flexible.

"We understand the stresses and anxieties so we have designed programs around the busy schedule of university life," she said.

"Students can still concentrate on study while constructing and delivering speeches that break down their fear of public speaking."

Meetings are on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

Everyone is welcome - students and non-students.
