Alliance fights urban sprawl

THE Save the Northern Beaches Alliance has launched its website in the lead-up to the ‘Wall Against Sprawl’ rally on Saturday.

Cr Mark Graham said the website would help co-ordinate public responses and create groundswell support.

“The community needs to band together to protect our precious greenbelts and the campaign launch is a springboard for our Saturday rally where we will draw our line in the sand and make a wall against unsustainable urban sprawl,” Cr Graham said.

“We want the Planning Minister to prohibit these developments and the land to be purchased for future generations under the Coastal Lands Protection Scheme.

“Research shows it’s possible, the money exists and the legal mechanisms are there.”

Under the Coastal Lands Protection Scheme, the Department of Planning has the authority to zone and acquire high conservation value coastal land.

In addition, the RTA is required to offset biodiversity loss from the Sapphire to Woolgoolga upgrade and the Alliance is calling on the RTA to contribute money from its habitat compensation fund to help purchase these natural assets.

Saturday’s rally kicks off at 11am at Emerald Beach car park on Fiddaman Road.
