No sympathy for reckless travellers in trouble

TRAVELLERS who act recklessly while overseas are unlikely to get any sympathy from the Abbott government, under a new consular services strategy.

After the government rejected consular assistance for Australians overseas without travel insurance, the strategy marks a further tightening of rules on helping those in trouble.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said on Wednesday the new strategy would emphasise "priority to those Australians in the most difficult circumstances".

The plan would also give "less latitude" to those whose actions were wilfully reckless.
