Pacific Highway up for auction

BUYING things through eBay is fraught with risks at the best of times, but if you're bidding on a section of the Pacific Highway you may well be biting off more than you can chew.

Coffs Harbour stirrer John O'Gorman listed the section of highway between Coffs Harbour and Kempsey for auction with no reserve last week, starting a fierce bidding war and a raft of questions from curious eBayers, with nearly 730 views.

Tagged as a “renovator's dream” that will “suit undertaker, hospital, smash repairer”, the stretch reached $1.25 yesterday after eight bids, and the auction is set to end next Monday morning.

It was initially listed early last week but was taken down by eBay because he wrote the words “all offers considered” – an apparent breach of eBay policy. The initial listing received nearly 500 views.

The item description sums up the spirit of the listing:

“The vender has been declared legally and morally bankrupt, your purchase offers the following benefits:

  • NSW and Federal government-sanctioned motor vehicle kill zone.
  • Kill rates per kilometre in excess of developing countries.
  • Vehicle insurance claims well in excess of national average.
  • Guaranteed traffic movements of 100,000-plus per day with client base sourced both locally and interstate.
  • Dangerous chemical and highly flammable material shipment corridor.
  • Single carriage roadway.
  • Guaranteed maximum distance between oncoming vehicles of three metres.
  • Extensive winding sections.
  • A high rainfall area guaranteeing slippery road conditions year-round.

Asked yesterday what he would do with any funds generated from the sale, Mr O'Gorman said he would present a cheque to Member for Coffs Harbour Andrew Fraser.

Mr O'Gorman said the listing – along with his own “plump chook” blog – had received plenty of positive feedback from his satirical awareness campaign.
