No funds for bushfire safety

THERE are fears for the safety of locals during what promises to be one of the harshest fire seasons to date, with funding for the clearing of fire trails in the area falling short.

Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Melinda Pavey, said leaked documents obtained by her office revealed the Departments of Lands is receiving just enough to prepare the Eungai Creek fire trail this fire season.

“The amount of money that has been allocated is infinitesimal,” Ms Pavey said. “This issue here is public policy, I'm surprised the Minister is hiding behind the Commissioner. It's up to politicians to debate about public policy.”

She said everyone was feeling the pressure of the fire season ahead of us.

“National Parks are under enormous stress. Under this government their estate has doubled but their maintenance budget has remained the same.”
