NNSW soccer boys denied chance of medal

NORTHERN New South Wales have lost their last opportunity to force a passage into a medal game at the FFA Youth Championships.

With tempers fraying at the edges and the referee issuing yellow cards like confetti, the 14-year boys went down 3-1 to Victoria Metro, leaving them stranded in third position in Group B, and into today's 5th vs 6th playoff at 5.30pm, against an opponent still being decided.

The boys were down 0-1 after 20 minutes but levelled up seven minutes into the second stanza.

But a goal to the Victorians within eight minutes and the tragedy of an own-goal soon after, sealed their fate.

Tensions continued to rage with a Northern player felled in back play and several confrontations continuing until full-time.

Earlier in the day the 15-year boys broke their drought with a 3-0 win over Northern Territory, bringing down the curtain on a campaign that began with high hopes but ended with so much disappointment.

The 15s play off in the 9th vs 10th consolation at 2.30pm, most likely against one of the Victorian sides.

Semi-finals will kick-off this morning at 10.30am and 12.30pm with winners to take centre stage at the main event on Saturday.
