NISSAN is taking niche cars to a new level, taking the wraps off its new drop-top luxury soft-roader – the Murano CrossCabriolet.

As Drive has previously reported, the new Murano CrossCabriolet was touted as the “world's first all-wheel-drive crossover convertible”, and, along with an official image, new details have also emerged following the unveiling of the car on Facebook.

The CrossCabriolet will reportedly be a dedicated four-seater, and will feature a “premium” interior, and enough room for golf bags and luggage.

No other details have been released, but it is expected that the drop-top will be equipped with Nissan’s 3.5-litre V6 engine (producing 191kW of power and 336 Nm of torque) combined with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Just one image has been released of the new two-door soft-top convertible soft-roader with the Murano CrossCabriolet’s styling cues obviously influenced by the sporty 370Z Roadster convertible (those boomerang-shaped tail-lights, for example).

The Murano CrossCabriolet is due to be shown at this week’s Los Angeles motor show, and will go on sale early in 2011 in the US.

Nissan Australia says it has no plans to offer the Murano drop-top Down Under.

Nissan is known for its bravely styled niche vehicles, including the boxy asymmetrical Cube, its soft-roader-cum-sports-car Juke, and even the swoopy Murano soft-roader.

Nissan isn’t the only brand considering a soft-roader soft-top. Drive recently reported BMW’s plans to show off a concept targa-style version of its X6 4WD coupe (that will be fitted with a retracting glass roof) by mid-2011.
