Nissan GT-R breaks fastest drift world record

IT'S the drift that could probably be seen from space. Japanese drift champion Masato Kawabata has set a Guinness World Record for the fastest ever drift, hitting 304.96kmh in a MY16 Nissan GT-R.

Wonder what that looks like? Film serves better than words, so check out the rather beautifully shot video for full effect. Much tyre smoke, and much respect to the drifting expert for being brave enough to instigate a drift at such speed. Legendary status assured.

Kawabata had to hold the drift at a 30 degrees angle for the record to be ratified, and duly completed the high speed sideways spectacular in a specially-tuned two-wheel drive version of Nissan's GT-R supercar at Fujairah International Airport in the UAE.

The GT-R involved was developed, as you'd imagine, with the support and co-ordination of NISMO specialists. It was tuned to 1030kW in order to set the record, with the all-wheel-drive system being ditched to send power through the rear treads only to aid such an epic drift manoeuvre.

Nissan said: "The car was set up for agility while maintaining stability and confidence-inspiring handling characteristics - essential when performing such challenging feats."

Fujairah International Airport was chosen as the drift venue due to its three kilometre airstrip which was deemed sufficiently long enough for the challenge.

The UAE are also quite keen on the positive publicity such stunts generate, and Nissan said the country and airport offered "enormous levels of support for this world record attempt."

So as much as you'd like to see such things at Sydney International Airport, best not hold your breath.
