Nikolic rides three winners

JUDGING by the performance of Group 1 winning jockey Danny Nikolic yesterday, he may have discovered the magic formula that ensures success.

Nikolic rode three winners yesterday, including Mossurmi in the feature event the Coffs Harbour VB Gold Cup, and also finished second a further four times to round off his day.

When asked what his pre-race preparation was Nikolic was a bit coy before finally letting the secret slip.

“I had a good night out last night, got home at two o’clock and I was slightly intoxicated,” Nikolic admitted.

When pressed for further details it was revealed that a session of karaoke at the Coffs Hotel was the choice of entertainment on Cup eve.

Green Green Grass Of Home by Tommy Jones was the big number,” he said.

Starting as the equal favourite with Sawtell Cup winner Trescorpioni, Nikolic piloted Mossurmi toward the back end of the field from a wide barrier where the six-year-old settled down for an easy run almost immediately.

Long Journey Home led the field out, setting only a fair pace with Blinkin Easy, Lockmar, Rollins and Trescorpioni following.

By the home turn Trescorpioni hit the front but faded badly as the pace was put on.

It was here that Nikolic and Mossurmi made their move.

Riding for luck and finding a few gaps, Nikolic gave the Mossman gelding a couple of cracks of the whip to swamp the field and win by one and three-quarter lengths over a courageous Long Journey Home.
