Tough season opener for new Tigers

NEWLY promoted Westlawn have been handed a tough assignment in its opening match of the 2011 North Coast Football season.

The Tigers have been asked to face reigning premier Coffs United when the season kicks off on April 1.

The preliminary draw for next season’s men’s 1st Division and Youth grade has been released and North Coast Football operations manager Bob Harris believes that the opening match of the season is the perfect time to play against the formidable Lions.

“There’s no better time to get the Lions than early on in the season,” Harris said.

“That’s the time when anyone can beat anyone.”

Provisions have been made in the draw for free weekends so clubs can participate in the knockout rounds of next year’s Northern NSW Solo Cup.

“Everyone’s invited to play in the Solo Cup, you don’t have to qualify so hopefully a lot of clubs will throw their hat into the ring when it comes time to nominate for the competition, the operations manager said.

“There will be two rounds played before the season starts and a wet weather weekend has been set aside for the third round if any of the clubs reach that stage.”

As usual there are also weekends set aside in case any clubs need to play catch-up games that weren’t played due to wet weather.

“We’re pretty well up and running for next season already,” Harris said.

“There’s lots of things happening in the off-season with the annual general meeting being held on November 27.”

The grand finals in 2011 will once again be played at the BCU International Stadium with September 16, 17 and 18 booked for the big weekend of football..
