New rowing club for Coffs

ROWING is set to be reborn on the Coffs Coast with a new club ready to hit the water.

The brainchild of local paddler and former state and Australian representative Dan Backhouse, the Coffs Coast Rowing club hopes to give locals a chance to participate in the popular Olympic sport.

"When I moved back to the area after living in Sydney I was surprised the closest rowing clubs were in Taree and Grafton.

"There was absolutely nothing available to people on the Coffs Coast and I felt the region needed its own club.

"Grafton and Taree are both very strong clubs and hopefully over time our club can be too."

The club has gained the support of Olympic silver medallist Brooke Pratley who will be a guest speaker at an information session set to be held on May 12 at the Coffs Harbour Surf Club from 10am.

"We want to raise the awareness of rowing in the region and to have a champion of the sport in Brooke Pratley to help is a major coup," Backhouse said.

"The session will be an opportunity to explain what we are about and how to get involved in this great sport.

"At the moment the club is relying on word of mouth to attract new members so it would be great to see a big turnout next Sunday.

Currently rowing on the Bellingen River at Repton, Backhouse said the club is all about participation.

"Rowing is a great social sport and we would love to see as many people out on the water. Who knows the next Olympians could come from the Coffs Coast."
