New medical centre nears
WORK on a new multi-million dollar medical centre at South Coffs could be underway before the end of the year.
Tenders for its construction are about to be called but first the State Government will need to sign off on modifications to the original plans.
The massive development at the northern entrance to the Coffs Harbour Health Campus was approved in May 2008.
Private town planning and development consultant Rick Bennell said the proposed changes are minor but would require the consent of the NSW Office of Water.
“The original plan approved by the Coffs Harbour City Council was for a three-storey building which was below 13 metres in height,” Mr Bennell said.
“But we have had to increase the height in the plant room to accommodate more pipes, wiring and data cabling, and that has put the building height over the 13-metre mark. Hence we now have to get consent from the State Government for the modifications,” he said.
“It will be a huge boost for Coffs Harbour and the health needs of local people. Apart from the many jobs generated during its construction the medical centre will have a staff of around 200 people.”
Mr Bennell said at this stage the development would incorporate 200 car parking bays, doctor’s consulting rooms, a small pharmacy and cafe and a number of specialist medical suites.
