New licence won’t help grey nomads

AS FAR as licence regs go and skills, it's not going to help.

Way too many variables in stuff like age and fitness to drive, vehicle suitability to tow, caravan set-up, weight and balance.

You'd have to create a change in wobble box rego for starters so that the driver, vehicle and van are locked into the registered combination to ensure that the gear is spot-on and legal in all states and territories and matching number plates are fitted.

Break the combination and the van is illegal.

Fatigue management too is a biggie, so log books mandatory plus lower the BAC to 0.00 or 0.02.

Driver skill is going to be very hard to do in a practical situation because of the variables.

Many of the grey nomads have little idea when it comes to tyre and vehicle safety, believing that off-road or all-terrain tyres are suitable for carrying weight when they actually are not, and tyre side wall ply ratings are all over the place and so many cheap out on stuff that would land a transport operator in jail - so let's start running them over the Shakers while we are at it, eh?

Backing I've taught plenty of people over the years and it's an individual thing. Use your mirrors, don't turn your head and if that fails then steer with your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel so left - left for the trailer and right - right for the trailer.

Disable reverse cams when towing too because they just confuse the crap out of a lot of people and I've ended up taping a few up so the pupil doesn't get too confused.

I didn't realise exactly how valuable being a truckie was until I re-qualified as a car driving instructor and the skills and crossover is a massive benefit.

Finally get the motoring organisations like NRMA/RACV/RACQ to run education campaigns and information handouts.   Licence testing hasn't helped with the road toll and driver skills, has it?

And dealing with older members of the community will be way harder - more bad habits, opinions and status issues - so make it a point of pride to gain advanced wobble box skills and knowledge.
