New GM counts cost of floods

BELLINGEN Shire got off pretty lightly following the floods earlier this week.

General manager Liz Jeremy said an initial assessment indicated repairs would most likely cost about $300,000.

“But there are still some bridges under water, so a final assessment is yet to be completed,” Mrs Jeremy said.

“I’ve heard (recently re-opened) Justin’s Bridge is doing beautifully . . . but there is some damage to the bridge over the Nymboida River on the Moonpar Road.”

She said shire-wide damage included road scours and washouts to bridge approaches, embankment slips along roadsides and damage to drains.

By yesterday afternoon water levels had dropped right back however Darkwood Road remained closed from Hobart’s Bridge.

Mrs Jeremy said she had been impressed by the well-honed response of council staff and the community.

“Everyone understands the issues and knows their roles. The co-operation is really good and everything happens smoothly.”
