Neighbourhood Centre to close

DORRIGO Neighbourhood Centre is closing.

The funding for the program was limited to two years and this will finish at the end of June.

The Neighbourhood Centre has been located at Hickory House and provided an opportunity for many local projects and activities to get started.

Some projects have been short term or single events (Welcome to Dorrigo, First Aid for Babies, ‘men’s group the movie’, Shine, multicultural cooking class, Life Experience Counts), whilst others are still continuing.

University of the Third Age (U3A) emerged from the Neighbourhood program and gained the support of a dedicated volunteer committee.

Dorrigo Plateau U3A is now an independent organisation with 150 members, offering ‘social education’ to seniors. It will continue well into the future.

The imminent closure of the Neighbourhood Centre prompted a group of residents to come together and form Dorrigo Plateau Community Inc.

This group will provide ongoing community development in the region.

Several projects are in progress including a men’s shed, youth centre activities and emergency pet care.

In the coming year, this group will seek long-term funding for a new Neighbourhood Centre.

In the short term, information and assistance is available from Bellingen Neighbourhood Centre on 6655 1239.
