Near miss as car veers into oncoming traffic north of Coffs

AN ELDERLY couple had a narrow escape after their car went between two oncoming vehicles and down an embankment on the Pacific Highway north of Coffs Harbour.

Around 3.15pm on Sunday the couple were travelling north near Halfway Creek when their vehicle is believed to have swerved into an oncoming line of traffic.

Somehow it missed two other vehicles - one towing a trailer - as it cut through the opposite lane, before coming to rest 20 metres down an embankment.

Passing motorists gave assistance to the couple and the man was treated for severe lacerations to his legs by paramedics arriving at the scene.

He was transported to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital where his condition is unknown.

Police are at the scene and will investigate if fatigue was a factor in the incident.

Members of the public who can assist with information are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
