NC boats crews take on the best

THREE North Coast Branch boat crews will make an assault on this weekend’s elite carnival at Wanda Beach in Sydney.

The Navy Australian Surf Boat Rowers League (ASRL) has invited 72 crews from 38 surf life saving clubs around the state to decide which crews are deserving of the title in a contest dubbed ‘best of the best.’

Red Rock-Corindi Ragers open men, Coffs Harbour Biffins under-23 men and Woolgoolga under-19s all lead their divisions in the North Coast Surf Boat series and will bid for the 2010-11 championship at the grand finals in Coffs Harbour on March 26.

ASRL media director Darren Saffin tipped the visiting North Coast crews would get a cracking dress rehearsal today for their domestic bids later in the month.

“Over a race distance of 400 metres with wet starts and finishes, it means intense racing with extremely tight finishes,” he said.

“With good size surf predicted for the weekend and sunny weather, thrills and spills are expected.

“Crews in each division will race four rounds for points with the division winner being the crew with the most points.”

Meanwhile, Park Beach Hoey Moey will be the venue for the North Coast Surf Boat series presentation after the final day’s racing. Attendance numbers must be finalised by next Saturday and tickets can be booked with Bec Mitchell on becmitchell@optusnet.com.au
