DESPITE the inability to include NBA players, as well as a flurry of injuries, Basketball Australia has selected a formidable Boomers team to represent the country at the 2017 FIBA Asia Cup.

The team consists entirely of NBL players, led by two former Olympians, David Andersen and Brad Newley.

The timing of the tournament - held in Beirut, Lebanon from August 8-20 - means Australia's collection of NBA talent isn't available. Injuries to key guard, Chris Goulding, Nathan Sobey, and Kevin Lisch, also had an effect on the selections.

The Boomers' coaching staff, led by Andrej Lemanis, held a selection camp in the middle of July, and came away with a team set to feature multiple debutants, as well as one that features every NBL club.

"It is a great opportunity for the first-timers to get that international experience with the Boomers which will serve us well as we progress through the qualification process," Lemanis said.

"I've been so impressed and humbled with the attitude that everyone came into camp with. I know how much it means to them to be in a Boomers environment and every time you are around them, it reminds you just how lucky we are to be involved in a wonderful program with wonderful people."

This Boomers team is expected to remain at camp, before flying to Beirut on August 2 to take part in practices and exhibition games.
