Native orchard walk

NATIVE fruit and nut farm Valley in the Mist, near Macksville, is part of Our Living Coast’s Living Smart program and next Tuesday, April 19, the orchard will welcome visitors for a farm walk and morning tea.

Host Dennis Ryan will show guests around his property where Australian bush tucker is grown in harmony with the surrounding natural environment.

Macadamias, finger limes, lilly pilly and lemon myrtle are all grown in commercial quantities and harvested for use in chutneys and jams.

The native fruit and nut orchards cover 10 hectares, with the balance of the property being managed for conservation and wildlife.

More than 100 bird species have been recorded on the property and the estuarine wetlands are part of the locally-named “Hundred Acre Swamp”.

The business received a bronze medal award in the 2010 North Coast Tourism Awards for business excellence and is a great example of a successful combination of sustainable business, tourism and nature conservation.

Bookings for the excursion are essential. Please visit www.ourlivingcoast.com.au or call Pia Dollmann on 6648 4644.

The Our Living Coast Living Smart program is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust.
