Nambucca fire captain honoured
FIRE and Rescue NSW has offered its deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of Nambucca Heads Fire Captain Terry Marshall, who died suddenly this week.
Terry Marshall, 52, was a highly respected and decorated firefighter, who was one of the first Aboriginal fire captains appointed in NSW.
Fire and Rescue NSW Mid North Coast Commander Superintendent David Gray said fire captain Terry Marshall was a renowned member of the Nambucca Heads community, who will be greatly missed.
“Terry was one of the most principled people I have ever met and I don't say that lightly,” Supt Gray said.
“He was one of our most respected firefighters and captains on the Mid North Coast and he held the honour of being one of the state's only indigenous fire captains.
“Terry was a fine, upstanding member of his community, a role model, who did a lot of work to encourage indigenous men and women to become members of Fire and Rescue NSW.”
Supt Gray said Terry Marshall had pulled together the Nambucca Heads Fire Station in tough times, following the recent deaths of fire captain Gary McCudden 14 months ago, and firefighter Matthew Vinen in September last year.
“Terry was an extremely compassionate person; he took on the responsibility of being there when police informed Matthew's family of his passing in that terrible car accident,” he said.
“He said it was his place as the fire captain to be there for Mrs Vinen and the Nambucca Heads fire crews.
“He brought the firefighters and their families together in the wake of those tragedies; he was a really caring person who took his responsibility very seriously.”
Mr Marshall, who also served as a field officer with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, received a National Service Medal in 2008 and a Fire and Rescue NSW Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct in 2003.
He served as a firefighter for 18 years, after joining the ranks in 1993 and was appointed to fire captain of the Nambucca Heads Fire Station in 2008.
Terry Marshall's funeral will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Mann St at Nambucca Heads on Monday at 11am.
