Nadia Coote, who plays the highly competitive ballroom dancer in Strictly Ballroom The Musical, visited The Big Pineapple yesterday to share some tips with local dance students.

The stage musical, based on Baz Luhrmann's acclaimed feature film and featuring costumes by his wife Catherine Martin, makes its Queensland debut next month.

"When I first heard Strictly Ballroom was coming (to the stage) I said 'I have to be Tina'," Coote told the Daily.

"Even though it's not that big of a part, everybody remembers her (from the film) and she has the best costumes. She's so much fun on stage and she gets to do more in the musical. She has her own number, Heavenly Pineapples."

Coote, who played Penny in the original Australian and West End productions of Dirty Dancing, ran through some of the steps from the mambo with students from Sunshine Coast Sharks Dance and Cheerleading School.

It was the first taste of ballroom for many of the dancers, ranging in age from 10 to 18.

"I love teaching. Before this show I was teaching rhythmic gymnastics for the Special Olympics" she said.

"It's nice to be able to do this and give to the young dancers."

Strictly Ballroom will be Coote's first show at QPAC since Dirty Dancing premiered there 10 years ago.

Brisbane is the final stop of the show's Australian tour after lengthy seasons in Sydney and Melbourne.

"I remember how fantastic the audiences were here so we're all excited we'll get to finish on a high in Brisbane," she said.

Strictly Ballroom opens at QPAC's Lyric Theatre on September 9.
