Muskets playing for Old Boys
THE IPSWICH Musketeers will have more than just a place in the Greater Brisbane League finals to play for this weekend.
Sunday's match against third-placed Surfers Paradise is also the Musketeers' annual Sponsors, Old Boys and Supporters Day at the Tivoli ground.
Foundation members Ken "Pud” Hogan and Neil "Tango” Bradley will open the day, beginning with the first match at 9am.
The function starts at 11am, with the main game against Surfers set for 1pm.
Former Olympic players Peter Vogler, Paul Coogan, Kim Jessop and Peter Wood will share in the celebrations.
Club president Jon "Roach'' Campbell and old boys organiser Brian "Ziggy” Zeidler are calling on all past players, officials and supporters to attend the day.
In remembrance of former player, committee man and life member Harry Stathis, the A Grade players will be wearing black arm bands on Sunday.
The on-field significance of Sunday will depend on how the Musketeers perform in the first match of the series on Friday night.
A win would keep their hopes at a repeat GBL grand final appearance alive, whilst a loss would all-but rule them out of finals contention with just a catch-up game against Windsor Royals to follow.
The Ipswich ball club's up and down GBL season was encapsulated in last week's two-match series away to Coomera Cubs.
The Musketeers were held scoreless in the opening match, falling 10-0. But they returned with a vengeance less than 48 hours later to win 16-5.
When the two teams last met in round nine at Beenleigh, it was Surfers who swept the series with 13-5 and 11-1 victories.
With their place in the GBL finals secured, the Gold Coast outfit can only play spoiler for the Musketeers.
The fifth-placed Musketeers must also hope Logan Lightning drop at least one of their two matches against Coomera this round if a place in the final four is to be had.
