Muscle car club revs it up for Josh

WITH the wind in his hair and the roar of powerful engines echoing in his ears, you couldn't wipe the smile off Joshua Charrington-Miletic's face.

The car-mad 20-year-old, who has spent his life in and out of hospital, had a chance to forget all his troubles and indulge in some old fashioned fun yesterday.

A group of 10 Sunshine Coast vintage muscle-car owners and enthusiasts banded together to give Joshua the ride of his life, with a cruise up to Maleny ending at Ricks Diner in Palmwoods for lunch.

With an uncertain future ahead of Joshua, moments like these are precious.

The Sippy Downs man has IPEX Syndrome; a rare autoimmune disease characterised by the development of multiple autoimmune disorders.

Joshua's mother Anna Miletic said doctors had not expected the brave young man to live beyond his second birthday, and could not predict how much time he had left.

"Josh is very high risk for leukemia and skin cancers, he's got kidney problems, he's got warts on his throat, chronic lung disease," she said.

"We almost lost him at four with kidney problems.

"He's here for a good time; it's not a long time."

Despite daily pain, Joshua's cheery outlook and inspirational strength had seen him overcome all the challenges life had thrown at him, Ms Miletic said.

Muscle-car enthusiast Daniel Gaskin, 22, said he organised the five-car event after he learned Joshua was a Holden fan.

"I found out that he was a pretty sick young man; he lives up the road from us and mum and dad had a fair bit to do with him," he said.

"I spoke to a few mates and said could we try and put a smile on his face for a day."

After cruising to Mary Cairncross Park in a Holden HQ Monaro and back down to Palmwoods in a 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle, Joshua said the event had been a very welcome surprise.

"I didn't even know the whole thing was happening," he said.

"It was so good, I loved it.

"I made sure they behaved," he said with a laugh.

Scott Hipwell, who owns the 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle, said he hoped the ride would show people the softer side of muscle car enthusiasts.

"We're not all idiots in cars doing skids around schools," he said.
