Mum, child asleep as car crashes

A MOTHER and child received a rude awakening yesterday morning when a car crashed into the bedroom of their unit as they slept.

At 6.10am, police responded to a report of a car crash on the corner of Rous Road and Margate Place, Goonellabah.

They arrived to find the car had left the road and crashed into the front of a ground-floor unit.

Lismore Police Sergeant Dave Eldridge said the unit’s occupants, a mother and her young daughter, were home at the time of the incident.

“The occupants received minor cuts and abrasions and were treated at the scene by paramedics,” he said.

The 31-year-old driver fled the scene and later reported his vehicle as stolen.

After a number of inquiries, police found the driver at his Goonellabah home shortly after the incident, Sgt Eldridge said.

“He was at home and assisted police with their inquiries,” he said.

“After he was spoken to, heattended Lismore police station of his own will.”

There was minor structural damage to the front of the unit and the vehicle was retrieved by a tow truck yesterday morning.

Sgt Eldridge said the offending driver would be charged with traffic offences and possibly charged with falsely reporting his vehicle as stolen.

Not long after emergency services were called to a car accident at Eureka.

About 9.15am on Lismore Road, a 44-year-old woman lost control of her car and crashed into a tree.

Police said she hit the brakes when she saw water on the road and her vehicle fishtailed.

NSW Fire and Rescue responded to the incident, where it was beli-eved the driver was trapped, but were later called off.

The woman sustained no injuries and was issued a negligent driving infringement notice.
