Mum adjusts exercise to fit in with family life

IT is hard to separate a mother and her new-born baby so Yamba physiotherapist and mother Meg Dougherty is starting Pilates classes where babies will be part of the exercise routine.

"The first is a mums and bubs fitness class which is for post natal, anywhere from six weeks onwards, preferably until their babies are mobile," Mrs Dougherty said.

"Classes offer a welcoming environment where you can exercise with your baby, meet other mums and regain your pre-pregnancy fitness."

Mrs Dougherty said mums would be interacting with their babies while exercising.

She was also running a Pilates session for pregnant women called Preglates.

"Preglates classes are based on traditional Pilates exercises and other contemporary physiotherapy approaches to strengthening, posture and preparation for child birth," she said.

"Preglates is suitable throughout all stages of pregnancy and the postnatal period from six weeks postpartum."

Mrs Dougherty, a physiotherapist who has undertaken additional training in women's health, said the classes were especially tailored to pregnant and new mothers.

Mums and Bubs fitness classes will commence next Wednesday from 9.30-10.30am at Ford Park, Yamba. They will continue each week thereafter.

The Preglates class is also expected to be held Wednesdays but a start date is yet to be confirmed.

The price includes a 30-minute physio consult, one-on-one Pilates session or massage with health fund rebates available.
