Mullum hospital has asbestos, but not Mr Fluffy

RUMOURS of Mr Fluffy loose-fill asbestos contamination at Mullumbimby District Hospital are untrue, according to Northern NSW Local Health District chief of staff Wayne Jones.

Greens MP Jan Barham raised the issue in NSW Parliament after hearing community concerns about the hospital's demolition once the new Byron Central Hospital has been built.

"It was the subject of a clean-up program a couple of years ago because asbestos was found there," she said.

"Someone who has been a longstanding member of that committee said they had heard that the hospital might have had Mr Fluffy asbestos.

"I have previously put questions on notice but unfortunately, as is the case with many questions on notice, I have not had very much back in the way of answers."

Mr Jones acknowledged there was asbestos at the site but said none of it was the particularly dangerous loose-fill kind used during the 1960s and 1970s for insulation.

"No. The Mullumbimby Hospital does not contain Mr Fluffy asbestos," he said.

"It is a matter of public record that Mullumbimby District Hospital does contain asbestos, with that asbestos monitored regularly and mitigation strategies are in place to contain this asbestos.

"These mitigation strategies are updated as required on the basis of advice from a hygienist."

Mr Jones said any asbestos would be removed before the site was sold or redeveloped, with current operations to move to the new Byron facility early next year.

"Following the vacation of Mullumbimby Hospital, the hospital will be officially closed and tenders called for the removal of any asbestos prior to either the sale or redevelopment of the current site," he said.
