MP urges input ahead of inquiry into nuclear energy

FAIRFAX MP Ted O'Brien is expecting a lively few months ahead, as he fields what he expects will be strong views from the public on nuclear energy.

Mr O'Brien is chair of the Standing Committee for Environment and Energy, and over the next few months will head an inquiry into nuclear energy, with a report to be presented to Parliament by the end of the year.

The inquiry will look into the conditions under which a future Coalition or Labor Government may consider introducing nuclear energy.

Feasibility and suitability will be the two most important questions to be answered, before any consideration could be given to the alternate energy source.

Mr O'Brien said it'd been well over a decade since the last study into nuclear energy, and he urged anyone with strong views on nuclear energy to make submissions.

He said it was important they listened to the views of the public, as well as expert opinions, and "dispassionately" assessed all the evidence that came before them.

The Standing Committee is made up of members of the Coalition, Labor and crossbench.
