MOVIE REVIEW: Peppa Pig's Aussie adventure will delight fans

BABE was part of a larger hero story. Miss Piggy bounced off Kermit and the rest of the Muppet ensemble. Peppa Pig is stuck with her sinusy little brother George as a sidekick - and he doesn't give her much to work with.

But the naively-drawn preschool star is a true performer. Peppa brings a cheeky, upbeat energy to whatever material she is given (some of which works well).

As the exceptionally thorough title suggests, My First Cinema Experience: Peppa Pig's Australian Holiday is NOT a movie, but rather a bunch of new episodes released as a theatrical package.

In between, Peppa's irrepressible human friend Daisy (Emma Grace Arends) alleviates the fidgets of ankle-biters' short attention spans by inviting audience participation with singalongs to time-honoured children's classics such as The Wheels on the Bus, animal imitations and the like.

Since this cinematic event is aimed at the very young, its creators aren't too concerned with geographical or biological verisimilitude.

Peppa Pig and her family turn up unannounced on Kylie Kangaroo's doorstep for a four-day visit (there are a couple of knowing asides from Kylie's Dad as to the length of the Pommies' stay).

During that time, they make daytrips to Uluru (where they are extremely fortunate to encounter a usually painfully shy and water-hugging duck-billed platypus) and The Great Barrier Reef.

There's also a wonderfully preposterous episode in which Miss Rabbit, the teacher's aide at Peppa's school, buzzes her friend The Queen over the Buckingham Palace intercom.

Since London is "her town," Her Majesty takes the role of tour guide, sequestering a red double decker bus for the purpose.

But perhaps the episode that works best is the one that is set in an ordinary school music class. Peppa and her fellow students are at their most natural and relaxed when they get to improvise their alien dance moves to a stretched tape recording (in a world where a Panda can be a police chief, retro technology barely raises an eyebrow.)

Peppa Pig is aimed at a specific target demographic and it won't play much beyond that. But the creators of this special cinematic event know their audience well. Peppa's fans are unlikely to be disappointed.
