NOT since Independence Day has the White House taken a battering like in Olympus Has Fallen.

The big-budget Hollywood blockbuster, from music video director turned feature filmmaker Antoine Fuqua,

features an all-out assault on the Presidential residence by a group of North Korean terrorists.

Gerard Butler is former Secret Service agent Mike Banning who comes to the rescue when President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) is held hostage by the mysterious Kang, played by The Fast and the Furious star Rick Yune.

Once the assault on 1600 Pennsylvania Street, the most highly protected building in the world we are reminded by some high-level official in the crisis room, starts it's unrelenting action.

The body count is just ridiculous, with giant machine guns mowing down dozens of people at a time.

I stopped counting the number of people who get shot in the head when I got to 10, and that wasn't very far into the movie.

Butler plays the role of the tough, lone hero well, as you'd expect. His character knows the White House inside and out, from his days as a presidential body guard, and uses it to his advantage.

He kicks butt, gets his butt kicked, bounces back and stabs quite a few baddies in the head.

The violence is pretty full-on and not for the feint hearted.

Olympus Has Fallen is also hyper-patriotic, with the music swelling every time the president or Banning do, well, anything.

A tattered, bullet-hole ridden American flag even falls to the ground in slow motion at sunset.

But for all of its clichés, Olympus Has Fallen is fun to watch and that's what counts.
