MOVIE REVIEW: Duplo the fun in Lego sequel

THE Lego Movie 2: The Second Part is a toy marketer's dream.

The film features not just regular Lego, but Duplo (Lego for toddlers) and a number of other characters that will end up being toys your children will want.

I know because last Christmas in my household had so much Lego in it we almost had to get an extra mortgage for storage space.

The other main feature of this sequel is that it fits the first part, well, like Lego pieces.

And the assembly of both parts does create a much bigger final product, one that is highly creative and interesting.

In Lego Movie 2, it's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens of Bricksburg are facing a huge new threat: Lego Duplo invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild.

What comes next is a deluge of creativity, pop culture and music references that will keep the adults entertained, and enough drama, twists and turns that will ensure the kids demand to watch the film again, and again, and again.

There are new characters that work a treat and refresh the whole story, with particular kudos to Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) who steals every scene she is in just with her voice, as hilarious character Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi.

But the old characters have also moved on. Well, almost. Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt, who also voices Rex Dangervest) is still obnoxiously positive, even after five years of destruction and bare survival in his world.

There is also Batman (voiced by Will Arnett) who is still as deranged and psychologically deaf as the real one, but in this film he undergoes one of the biggest transformations we have seen for the bat-themed multimillionaire hero: he gets the glitter treatment.

Other actors who lent their voices to animated toys in this film are Channing Tatum (Superman), Jonah Hill (Green Lantern), Richard Ayoade (Ice Cream Cone), Alison Brie (Unikitty and Ultrakatty), Jason Momoa (toy Aquaman), Ralph Fiennes (Alfred), and Bruce Willis as... Bruce Willis.

A comment is made about Marvel 'not returning our calls'. This likely references the fact that characters from the Marvel Universe are conspicuously absent from the Lego movies, due to rights issues with Disney.

Characters from the Star Wars universe (also owned by Disney) appeared in the original Lego movie, but not in this sequel.

Lego Movie 2 is as good as its predecessor and, together, they make up for a great cinematic experience. But this film is smart and entertaining enough to keep the assembly systems a favourite in Santa's list for decades to come.

The Lego Movie 2 opens on Thursday.
