Mother, daughter duo empowers teens with new store

A SAVVY mother and daughter duo aims to empower teenage girls with their new store Harper Bee.

Janine Burford and her daughter Jessica Wood are launching Harper Bee at Grand Central Shopping Centre today.

The store offers a range of age-appropriate clothing, jewellery, bedroom and bathroom accessories, stationery and other tech delights to allow girls to express themselves the way they want.

Ms Burford said she planned to use the store as a platform to empower girls during one of the trickiest phases of a young person's life.

"Being a teenage girl is hard. As parents, we want to keep our teens young but because they only know a digital world, these girls are wanting to grow up more quickly," she said.

"It can be a tough balancing act to parent a teenage girl these days.

"Through Harper Bee we want to help girls who are going through these challenging times to do amazing things to shape the kind of adults they will become.

"This is why we will be launching our Bee Aware project here in Toowoomba to help local girls fulfil their dreams."

Through Bee Aware, all profits made from the sale of specially designed tote bags, as well as fundraising activities outside the store, will be donated to Toowoomba teenage girls to help them achieve their goals.

The store's first design range, Personality, celebrates the different personalities of girls who are at a point in their lives where they are creating, trialling and developing their own identities.

Each of the products in the range are bespoke and are designed by popular Brisbane-based international illustrator Lauren Carney.

She was guided by Harper Bee's teen focus group, where members chose colours, slogans and prints.

Ms Burford said she was excited to launch her new brand in Toowoomba with plans to roll out more Harper Bee stores around Australia.
