Mostert has teammate in his sights after win

AHEAD of this weekend's round of the V8 Supercars in Sydney, Chaz Mostert (pictured) said he would race teammate and series leader Mark Winterbottom right to the end of this year's championship.

The defending Bathurst 1000 champion made good on that promise, slashing Winterbottom's lead by 118 points, and jumping ahead of Craig Lowndes into second place on the standings after taking out yesterday's race in great style despite the wet conditions.

That victory followed an excellent effort in the two sprint races on Saturday, Mostert leading all the way from pole in race one, before finishing third to defending champion Jamie Whincup in race two.

"It's been a fantastic weekend, finished all the races and got a bank-up of points," Mostert said.

Winterbottom still leads the way, 174 points ahead of his young teammate, but he wouldn't want too many more results like yesterday's 18th-place finish.

The next round at Sandown next month will see the start of the enduro section of the championship.

POINTS:

  • Mark Winterbottom 1915,
  • Chaz Mostert 1741,
  • Craig Lowndes 1660,
  • Dave Reynolds 1633,
  • Fabian Coulthard 1580,
  • Jamie Whincup 1466.
