Woolworths has a huge hunger for local goat

ALL systems are goat for Dorrigo's Booma Boers, with supermarket giant Woolworths taking on their meat products on the Coffs Coast and 21 other stores.

The fifth generation farm has been raising the South African Boer breed of goat for 12 years and now the high-quality cutlets, sausages and leg roasts have found a huge outlet.

Goat meat is the world's most consumed red meat, with only seafood and poultry consumed more widely.

Booma Boers' head Justin Gilbert said goat meat, while still relatively unknown in Australia, was low in cholesterol and fat, yet high in protein.

"We have been raising goats in Dorrigo for generations," Mr Gilbert said.

"There has always been a demand in Australia for goat meat, but no one has ever been able to provide such a high quality product until we introduced our Boer variety into Woolies stores.

"We're proud to offer locally raised goat meat to stores in the area and are confident that the local community will love the versatility and health benefits of such quality produce."

The deal has been six months in the making and alongside the Coffs Coast supermarkets now stocking Booma Boers meat, 21 stores in Sydney and Brisbane have also had it on their shelves for a week with early sales going well.

The meat is described as "another white meat" with a pale colour and succulent texture when cooked.
