More dining, cycling coming in $400m Plaza upgrade

THE $400 million Sunshine Plaza redevelopment is set for a few tweaks which will put a smile on the faces of Coast cyclists, shoppers and diners.

Due to be completed before Christmas, 2018, the massive revamp of the Coast's major shopping centre is set to bring 100 new retailers to Maroochydore as well as a David Jones outlet.

A new Big W, upgraded Myer and a new entry at the Amaroo St access point are all major parts of the plans which will increase the Plaza from 73,000sq m to more than 107,000sq m.

Developer Lendlease has proposed a series of amendments to the plans already approved, with the focus on improving safety for cyclists and further activation of the ground floor along Cornmeal Creek.

Two finger wharves proposed for both sides of Cornmeal Creek look set to be replaced with cabanas along the proposed boardwalk on the northern side of Cornmeal Creek.

Sunshine Plaza centre manager Michael Manwaring said a new promenade along Cornmeal Creek, from the existing Lovisa fashion store and Riba Kai Cafe Lounge will stretch almost all the way to Southern Dr, providing added dining opportunities along the strip.

Meanwhile cyclists will be accommodated further with tweaks planned to make cycling more visible within the new shopping centre, encouraging further use of pushbikes.

Lendlease plans to shift change rooms for cyclists from the ground floor of the north-east car park into the revamped Amaroo Plaza, with the shift to a more active pedestrian zone better aligned with crime prevention measures.

With cyclists more visible to customers and staff is hoped to also promote cycling as a form of active transport.

Mr Manwaring said there would be 72 end-of-trip facilities installed for cyclists at the Amaroo St plaza, with showers and lockers designated for both men and women.

The link from Southern Dr is also set for a tweak, with a glass facade to be installed to increase vision looking out from or into the new connection to the upgraded Plaza.

That is also set to improve safety and boost crime prevention measures for pedestrians and cyclists using the link.

Lendlease said the gross leaseable area of the site with these changes remained consistent with what was initially approved.

Mr Manwaring said there were about 200 workers on-site at the moment and the project was on-track for completion before Christmas 2018.
