Momentum builds for Coffs Harbour Gold Cup racing carnival

WITH the July racing carnival now underway in Grafton, momentum is building for when the spotlight shines on Coffs Harbour.

The Coffs Harbour Gold Cup carnival begins on Sunday, July 27.

It's NBN Community Cups Day with feature race the $25,000 Sawtell Cup.

This year, the hotly contested Fashions on the Field will also feature a category for the little ones with special guest NBN's Big Dog as the judge.

Sportsman's Race Day is on Wednesday, August 6, with the annual Gold Cup to follow one day later.

Racing Club chairman Alan Johnson said Sydney's two biggest stables will be represented on the two main days.

"We've got confirmation that Sydney's premier trainer Chris Waller will be a special guest at the sportsman's breakfast and now all I have to do convince him to bring a couple of his best horses with him," he said.

"Also, I've spoken to Mark Newnham at the Waterhouse stable and Gai intends to nominate two horses for the Cup.

"Her dad, TJ Smith, won the first modern Cup in 1971 with Regal Rhythm and she's very keen to follow in his footsteps and claim one for herself."

However, there's no chance of history being made with three straight wins in the Cup by Pepperwood.

The Liam Birchley-trained gelding will be a 10-year-old by the time the race is run and he is now in retirement after having his last race start at the Gold Coast back in January.
