Mixed start to mens hockey season

THE NSW Waratahs men's hockey team had a mixed start to its Australian Hockey League season, finishing the opening weekend of competition with a win and a loss against the Canberra Lakers.

Played at the Bathurst Hockey Complex, Canberra dealt the Waratahs a 3-1 loss on Saturday.

However, the Waratahs, including former Grafton players Brent Livermore (captain), Robbie Green, Peter Kelly and Nick Russ, rebounded on Sunday to score a 3-1 victory.

The Waratahs were pleased with their form reversal on Sunday, with Livermore noting the improvement in effort from the first game.

“Our structure, effort and control of the ball made the difference,” Livermore said.

“We were over anxious at times yesterday (Saturday), but were able to make things happen out there today.

“The transfer through the midfield was pleasing, however our penalty corner conversions is definitely where we need to focus our attention going into round two.”

The Waratahs will take on Northern Territory in Darwin this weekend.
