Mixed day for Denis

THE jockey of the locally-trained five-year-old bay or brown mare That Pretty Girl, Zoe White, says keeping And Jubilations at bay proved key in winning the Gold and Black race three in yesterday's Melbourne Cup five-race card at Ferguson Park.

And it was sweet revenge for Gladstone trainer Denis Schultz, who witnessed That Pretty Girl finish eighth in a nine-horse field at the 850-metre Auslec Class B Handicap on October 22, also in Gladstone.

"That Pretty Girl got smashed in her last race,” Schultz said.

The mare was fourth favourite paying at $5, but she strode to victory by more than three lengths.

"Because she is a galloper, she goes well when she gets up in front,” Schultz said.

White said it is vital to establish an early lead on the shorter track at Ferguson Park.

She said That Pretty Girl was tested early by third-placed And Jubilations.

"She handled the track well and we copped a check from And Jubilations,” White said.

White also rode the Schultz-trained Vicious Girl to a second place in race two and capped off a productive day with a win in race four on Humanise.

Schultz' Duan Dubai was last in race one while his Blaze of Fortune was fourth in race four.

He then made the trip to Rockhampton to have his two gelding feature in race one and three with six-year-old Lightning Artist and seven-year-old Logical Outcome respectively.

Lightning Artist finished second while Logical Outcome came second last after entering race four at $8.
