Minister confirms 51yo former miner has Black Lung disease

NATURAL Resources and Mines Minister Anthony Lynham said a 51-year-old electrician who had worked in underground coal mines was the latest case.

He is not currently working in the mining industry.

A routine pre-employment medical assessment revealed abnormalities which, following further scans and tests, have been confirmed as coal worker's pneumoconiosis by a Brisbane-based respiratory physician.

All coal mine workers are required to undergo a mandatory Coal Mine Workers Health Scheme medical assessment prior to the start of their employment and then at least once every five years.

Dr Lynham said he would continue to be open and transparent about this important health issue.

This will be the sixth confirmed case in Queensland.
