Finance Minister billed taxpayers $23,000 for weekend trips

YET another Federal MP has been outed for costing taxpayers exorbitant amounts of money for travel.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann cost taxpayers more than $23,000 for weekend trips to Broome with his wife over five years, reports AAP.

The report said The Western Australia senator and his wife made five taxpayer-funded trips to the beach resort town between 2010 and 2014 for electorate business.

A 2014 trip for three days cost $6,996 with $5,662 of that going on flights. A further $820 also went to a travel allowance and $214 in car costs.

A weekend trip in July 2013 cost taxpayers $4,563 and another in 2012 cost $4,831.

A spokeswoman for Senator Coremann defended the minister, saying the expenses were all legitimate and appropriately declared.

"Senator Cormann's job as a senator for Western Australia necessarily involves travel across his very large electorate to attend functions and meet with constituents, business and community stakeholders," she told Fairfax Media.

"Inevitably, much of the travel and attendance at functions and events in the electorate, whether in Perth or across regional WA, occurs Fridays to Sundays, when Senator Cormann has returned back to his home state from interstate parliamentary work commitments."

Mr Cormann also recently came under scrutiny earlier this week for claiming flights for him and his wife for a trip to Melbourne in 2013 that included attending the AFL grand final.

ABC reported he claimed $3,533 for the flights.

Mr Cormann's office told the ABC the senator had official business before, during and after the game.
