Mini Cooper launches with five doors from $27,750

MINI has launched a five-door version of its retro-inspired Cooper.

Starting from $27,750, the new Mini 5-door is aimed at filling a convenience and practicality void in the range.

It's available with three engines, a three-cylinder turbo petrol, three-cylinder turbo diesel and a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol. Automatic transmissions can be optioned across the range.

Longer and taller and sitting on a longer wheelbase than the new Mini three-door hatch that was launched in April, the new model has seating for five - albeit the bench seat is still tight.

There is extra boot space too, good enough for two small suitcases. Handy for small families, the 278 litres can be expanded to 941 litres with the 60/40-split rear seat back folded flat.

"With more space for five occupants and their luggage, the new Mini 5-door is the perfect premium small car for the family or those whose lifestyle requires extra interior space and flexibility. At the same time, it maintains Mini's characteristic contemporary styling, refined performance and sensational driving dynamics," he said.

With an overall length of 3982mm (Cooper S: 4005mm), width of 1727mm and height of 1425mm, the 5-door is 161mm longer and 11mm taller than the 3-door hatch.
