Millions of trees to revitalise urban forests

THE Federal Government is working with the community to plant 20 million trees by the year 2020 in an effort to re-establish green corridors and urban forests across Australia.

The program, part of the wider National Landcare Program, has four objectives:

  • 20 million trees planted by 2020;
  • local environmental conservation;
  • community engagement; and,
  • carbon reduction to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Environment and Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg recently announced a further $18 million for the 20 million trees project as part of a third round of funding.

"All projects under this round will invest in activities which support threatened ecological communities that are naturally and historically dominated by trees,” Mr Frydenberg said.

"This funding will support local communities and help transform the landscape through restoring and reconnecting our native vegetation.”
