Middle-aged women most at risk of internet scams: study

MIDDLE-aged Australians, especially women, are most at risk of being caught up in internet scams, a study has found.

Griffith University researchers looked at 400 cases of "advanced fee fraud" to find out how victims were convinced to send money to fraudsters.

Researcher Jacqueline Drew said the study has provided a "clearer picture and more certainty" about the most vulnerable group to internet fraud.

"It is these 40 to 60-year-old people. In particular we see vulnerability for females between about 50 and 60-years-old," Dr Drew said.

It is the first Australian study to use information from interviews with victims and police as well as hard data to investigate scams, including business and romance fraud.
