Meyers is still Sawtell coach
WORD that Sawtell’s new coach Dave Meyers has been forced into stepping aside from the role due to work commitments is greatly exaggerated.
Meyers is currently working in Melbourne and will be doing so for the foreseeable future but Saints’ assistant coach Les Cohen says that Meyers is still running the show.
“Dave is trying to work it so that he gets back on Thursdays and Saturdays,” Cohen said.
“We’re just going to stick with that at the moment and let it run for a little while.”
Cohen believes that Meyers and indeed the rest of the club are in the fortunate position of being able to handle having the coach away for a couple of nights a week due to having a team that has won four of the past five AFL North Coast premierships.
“We’ve had a side that you can put on auto-pilot basically,” Cohen said.
“There’s a lot of young kids coming through so they still need a lot of coaching in our game style and making sure that the kids have an understanding of that.”
The Saints committee are right behind Meyers and the amount of work that he’s picked up in the Victorian capital after the freak hail storm that city endured.
“The club is honouring its promise that he (Meyers) will be maintained as the coach until he says otherwise,” Cohen added.
Meyers will be taking charge of the Saints today even if it is only half of the squad.
Sawtell will be gearing up for next week’s season opener against Nambucca Valley with an intra-club practise match at Richardson Park this afternoon.
Both Meyers and Cohen will be taking charge of the respective teams.
