Meth user jailed for 'lab in a bag'

DISGUSTED with himself that he had missed the birth of his son because he was in jail, repeat drug offender Craig Stanley Kemp was determined to make a life change, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard yesterday.

Solicitor Jag MacDonald told the court his client was a shearer who had picked up an addiction to methamphetamine while touring western Queensland's shearing sheds some years ago.

Mr MacDonald said he had represented the now 41-year-old in court in the past when his client had admitted producing the drug for his own use.

Kemp had been in custody since his arrest in September and appeared by video link from Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre to plead guilty to nine drug-related offences.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Al Windsor told the court Kemp had been pulled over by police on Thor St, Murphys Creek, on September 3, last year.

A search of his car found a black sports bag inside which were a range of items which police claimed were drug lab equipment including a portable stove cook top, butane gas, glassware including a beaker, reaction vessel, filter papers, straws and iodine.

One of the straws had been cut down to make a scoop and some of the items had drug residue, Snr Const. Windsor said.

Also found in the bag was Kemp's wallet which contained his driver's licence, the court heard.

Magistrate Graham Lee declared the 202 days Kemp had spent in pre-sentence custody as time served under the sentence and sentenced him to 12 months in jail but ordered he be released on parole immediately.
