Memories of the Oodnadatta track

THE idea sounds simple enough - trawl the Oodnadatta Track, add some pop rivets, tie wire, thingamebobs and loads of insomnia and ...

Voila! you have The Elegant Oodnadatta, Sculptures from the Outback, by Bellingen High School teacher Fiona McAulay.

The exhibition at the Nexus Studio Gallery is an adventure in design that came from Fiona's adventures in the outback.

“Wherever I live, I'm always influenced by my surroundings,” Fiona said.

“Out in Central Australia that means lots of old houses, bottle dumps and abandoned lives.

“I love the mystery these things suggest, their hidden history.”

Sculptures and jewellery have been created from all manner of found objects that have then been reworked, melted, fused and shaped onto new pieces of rusty stuff.

“It's fun making these pieces.

“After I gathered all the raw materials I just played.”

The exhibition is on at Nexus Studio Gallery, Old Butter Factory, Bellingen until May 29. For information phone 6655 9222.
